Summer is the perfect time to experience the abundance of events and attractions Tasmania has to offer. February kicks off with the weekend-long Tas Wine Fest at the breathtaking Hobart Botanical Gardens. This event invites you to savour an array of exquisite wines from Tasmania’s cool climate, celebrated for its outstanding pinot noir. Among the vineyards offering vegan wines are Kate Hill, Josef Chromy, Milton, Spring Bay, Loira Wines, Wobbly Boot, and Puddleduck—ensuring plenty of options to suit your palate.
Tasmania, fondly known as the Apple Isle, also boasts several delightful cider houses worth visiting during your travels, including Plenty, Pagan, Willie Smith’s, and Frank’s. If that’s not enough excitement for one weekend, the annual Hobart Regatta spans three days over the long weekend, featuring a thrilling aquatic carnival. Enjoy on-water and in-water entertainment, best viewed from various spots along the Derwent River.
Hobart is also home to the Wooden Boat Festival, a biannual event that takes over the city’s docks. Admire beautifully crafted boats, immerse yourself in tuneful sea shanties, and try your hand at woodworking in engaging workshops.
For a vibrant Friday night, head to the Franklin Square markets, where locals and visitors alike enjoy live music and delicious food. Vegans are well-catered to here, with vendors like the local favourite, Harissa, offering a fully plant-based menu including their signature za’atar flatbreads and loaded nachos.
If markets are your passion, don’t miss the world-renowned Salamanca Market on Saturday mornings. Explore hundreds of stalls showcasing locally made spirits (such as Raspberry & Rose gin), handcrafted skincare, fresh produce—including crunchy apples—and plenty of lunch options.
Hobart continues to impress on Sundays with its Farmers’ Market. Indulge in the creations of Soyoyoy, Tasmania’s tofu dairy known for its award-winning vegan feta, spreadable brie-style cheese, fresh tofu, tempeh, vegan butter and soy milk. Harissa is also a market mainstay selling their delicious pita breads and dips, alongside Trouble Bakers, who serve delectable vegan croissants.
