The view from the summit of Kunanyi
Upon arriving in Hobart, you’re greeted by the comforting presence of Kunanyi (aka Mount Wellington), the majestic mountain that seems to embrace the city. It’s impossible not to be drawn to the countless trails surrounding this charming town, offering endless adventures for walkers, runners, and cyclists alike. I have found my happy exploring these trails so when you visit Hobart, take some time out to see for yourself.
A perfect introductory hike begins at the Fern Tree Tavern, following the Pipeline Track with its historic stonework paving your way. Along the route, you’ll encounter two beautifully crafted stone aqueducts. In the temperate rainforest section, the serene surroundings make you feel as though you’ve left civilization far behind.
As you continue downhill, the forest transitions into a drier, more open landscape. The trail widens and eventually leads to Gentle Annie Falls—a striking dry waterfall. Carefully navigating the falls brings you to the Waterworks Reserve, where you can enjoy a peaceful cup of tea before retracing your steps.
If you start this walk in the morning, you might like to return to the Fern Tree Tavern for a well-deserved lunch or a refreshing drink. The menu caters to vegans with delicious options like a falafel plate, eggplant schnitzel, and a veggie stack burger.
