Things to do in Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand

If you have free time in Auckland, there are plenty of ways to spend the day, from exploring the city itself to escaping to beaches, islands and countryside further afield. We’ve put together some of our favourite options below. They’re grouped into easy options, full-day outings and bigger day trips, so you can choose something that suits the amount of time and energy you have.

🌿 Easy

Auckland Museum & Auckland Domain

Auckland Museum is a great choice for anyone interested in New Zealand’s history and culture, with extensive Māori and Pacific collections as well as exhibitions about Aotearoa’s natural and military history.

The museum sits within the beautiful Auckland Domain, so you can combine the visit with a gentle walk through the surrounding parkland. It’s an easy half-day option and particularly good if you don’t want to spend your whole day travelling.

From Auckland CBD: 10–15 minutes by car/taxi, or public transport

Car needed: No

Auckland CBD, Queen Street & the Waterfront

For a very easy day, simply explore Auckland itself. Queen Street, Albert Park and many of the city’s shops, cafés and restaurants are within easy walking distance of the hotel.

It’s also worth wandering down towards the waterfront and Viaduct Harbour, where you’ll find boats, restaurants and plenty of places to sit and enjoy the atmosphere.

From Auckland CBD: Walkable, time varies depending on route taken

Car needed: No

Sky Tower

The Sky Tower is Auckland’s most recognisable landmark and an easy option for spectacular views without a lot of walking. From the observation levels, you can look across the city, harbour and surrounding volcanic landscape.

You could make this a short outing combined with lunch, shopping or exploring the CBD, rather than making it a full-day activity.

From Auckland CBD: Around 5 minutes’ walk

Car needed: No

Maungawhau / Mount Eden

Maungawhau (Mount Eden) is one of Auckland’s volcanic cones and one of the best places to appreciate the city’s volcanic landscape. From the summit there are wonderful views across Auckland and the harbour.

There is a walking track to the summit, although it is uphill, so this is best for people who are comfortable with a moderate walk. The summit walk is about 2.1km and takes around 40 minutes.

From Auckland CBD: Around 10–15 minutes by car/taxi/bus

Car needed: No

Walking: Moderate uphill walk

One Tree Hill & Cornwall Park

Cornwall Park is a beautiful green space centred around the volcanic cone of One Tree Hill. It’s a nice way to see a different side of Auckland without committing to a long day trip.

There are walking paths, mature trees, gardens and open spaces, with views across Auckland from higher points. You can make it as active or relaxed as you like.

From Auckland CBD: Around 15–20 minutes by car/taxi/bus

Car needed: No

⛴️ Full-day outings without a huge amount of driving

Devonport

Devonport is a lovely seaside village on Auckland’s North Shore. The ferry ride is part of the fun, with great views back towards Auckland as you cross the harbour.

Once you arrive, you can wander along the waterfront, browse the village shops and cafés, have lunch or simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. If you feel like a little more exercise, you can walk up Mount Victoria for the views.

From Auckland CBD: About 10–12 minutes’ walk to the Downtown Ferry Terminal, then around 12 minutes by ferry

Car needed: No

Best for: An easy half-day or relaxed full day

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is a great choice if you want to escape Auckland for the day. The island is known for beautiful beaches, countryside, galleries, cafés and vineyards, and the ferry journey across the harbour is a lovely part of the experience.

You don’t need to take a car over. Buses connect with the ferry at Waiheke, allowing you to explore different parts of the island. You could visit a beach, explore a village, visit galleries or simply enjoy a long lunch somewhere overlooking the water.

From Auckland CBD: About 10–12 minutes’ walk to the Downtown Ferry Terminal, then approximately 40 minutes by ferry

Car needed: No

Best for: A full day

Piha & Karekare

The dramatic west coast is completely different from Auckland’s harbour and city. Piha is famous for its black-sand beach, rugged coastline and huge surf, while nearby Karekare is quieter and surrounded by native bush.

It’s a wonderful choice for scenery and photography. You can walk along the beach, explore the surrounding landscape and stop somewhere for lunch. The journey from central Auckland takes around an hour each way, so allow most of the day.

From Auckland CBD: Approximately 1 hour each way by car

Car needed: Hire car or organised tour

Best for: Beaches, scenery and photography

Matakana

Matakana is a pretty rural village north of Auckland, surrounded by farmland, vineyards, beaches and small producers. It’s a nice option if you want to experience a more relaxed, rural side of the Auckland region.

The village has cafés, restaurants, shops and galleries, while the surrounding area has wineries, farms and beaches to explore. If your free day falls on a Saturday, the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market is an especially appealing reason to visit.

From Auckland CBD: Around 1 hour each way by car

Car needed: Hire car or organised tour

Best for: Food, countryside and a relaxed day out

🚗 Big day trips

These are the more ambitious choices. They’re definitely possible from Auckland, but be prepared for a long day on the road.

Hobbiton Movie Set

For anyone who loves The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, Hobbiton is an obvious choice. The movie set is in the beautiful Waikato countryside near Matamata, and the guided experience takes you through the actual Hobbiton set, including the famous Hobbit Holes, the Mill, the Double-Arched Bridge and the Green Dragon Inn.

There are several organised day tours from Auckland that include return transport, so there’s no need to hire a car. Auckland & Beyond Tours offers an approximately 8-hour day trip with Auckland CBD pick-up and drop-off, scenic stops and the Hobbiton guided tour. Cheeky Kiwi Travel is another option, with small-group guided tours, hotel pick-up and drop-off. Both are listed as official transfer partners by Hobbiton.

From Auckland CBD: Allow around 2 hours each way by tour vehicle

Car needed: No

Best for: Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit fans and anyone wanting to explore the beautiful Waikato countryside

Allow: A full day

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Waitomo is one of the most unusual day trips from Auckland. The region is famous for its limestone caves and, most famously, the tiny glowworms that light up the cave ceilings like a starry sky.

The famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves are visited by guided tour, including a quiet boat ride through the underground cavern beneath thousands of glowworms. It’s a fascinating natural experience and something quite different from the attractions around Auckland.

From Auckland CBD: Approximately 2.5 hours each way by car

Car needed: Hire car or organised tour recommended

Best for: Nature lovers and a unique New Zealand experience

Allow: A full day

Rotorua

Rotorua is probably the most distinctive day trip for anyone wanting to experience New Zealand’s geothermal landscape and Māori culture. The area is famous for steaming ground, bubbling mud pools, geysers and colourful geothermal features, alongside a strong Māori cultural heritage.

You could visit a geothermal attraction such as Te Puia, see the famous Pōhutu Geyser, explore Māori carving and weaving, or visit one of the region’s other geothermal areas. Rotorua is also famous for its hot pools, which make a relaxing end to a busy day.

From Auckland CBD: Approximately 3 hours each way by car

Car needed: Hire car or organised tour recommended

Best for: Geothermal scenery and Māori culture

Allow: A very full day. An overnight stay would be even better if you have the time.
